The funeral service for Dorothy M. Boom, 90, of Jamestown, ND, formerly of Marion, ND, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, at North Marion Reformed Church, rural Marion. Visitation will take place one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow in the North Marion Cemetery in the spring. Dorothy passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at SMP Health-Ave Maria, Jamestown.
Dorothy Marvene Van Dyk was born on November 8, 1934, to Gerrit and Nellie (Van Duyn) Van Dyk in Colton, SD. The eldest of seven children, she was raised on the family farm near Colton. Dorothy graduated from high school and worked as a bookkeeper at the local bank before marrying Donald Duane Boom on November 12, 1953. Together, they made their home on the family farm north of Marion, where they raised their four children: Dwight, Darla, Diane, and Duane.
Dorothy found joy in gardening, canning, and tending to her flowers. She enjoyed sewing, traveling, visiting with family and friends, and square dancing. In their later years, she and Donald spent winters in Mesa, Arizona.
A lifelong member of North Marion Reformed Church, Dorothy served as organist and pianist for over 60 years. She was active in the R.C.W., Bible studies, and church programs. Dorothy and Donald were also committed to the Gideon’s Bible ministry.
After retiring, the couple moved to Marion. Following Donald’s passing in 2017, Dorothy continued to reside in Marion until relocating to Jamestown. She lived at the Heritage Center and Rosedale before her passing.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Dwight (Karin) Boom of Marion, Darla (Brad) Carpenter of Dickey, ND, Diane Burton of Lenexa, KS, and Duane Boom of Minneapolis, MN; six grandchildren: Brent Carpenter (Lacey Wagner) of Jamestown, ND, Elijah (Sarah) Burton of Overland Park, KS, Tanner (Taylor) Burton of Kansas City, MO, April Boom of Page, ND, Deidra (Troy) Duchschere of Jamestown, ND, and David (Ashlee) Boom of Mandan, ND; and her great-grandchildren: Chloe Carpenter, Elleyah Carpenter, Sawyer Burton, Nolan Burton, Eleanora Burton, Archer Burton, and Hudson Boom.
She is also survived by her siblings: Audrey Reurink of Colton, SD, Elaine VanLiere of Colton, SD, and Gerald “Obie” (Carol) Van Dyk of Pella, IA; brother-in-law Jack Vandermay of Portage, MI; sisters-in-law Jelene Van Dyk of Portage, MI, and Joanne (Conrad) Harthoorn of Hollister, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Boom; her parents, Gerrit and Nellie Van Dyk; her brother, Marvin Van Dyk; her sisters, Betty Vandermay and Mary Medendorp; her son-in-law, John Burton; brothers-in-law Roy VanLiere, Jim Reurink, Jan Van Dyk, and Allen Medendorp; and parents-in-law Harold and Gertrude Boom, as well as Lloyd and Lola Boom.
Memorials may be designated to the Gideon’s International or North Marion Reformed Church.
