KINDRED, N.D. – The Valley City Hi-Liners faced off against Region 1 rival Kindred Vikings on Tuesday for their first matchup of the season. Despite a valiant effort, the Hi-Liners fell short, 56-44, in a game that showcased grit, momentum swings, and emerging stars.

The Vikings came out strong, using defensive pressure to force turnovers that led to quick transition points. Freshman standout Siera Nipstad and senior Kennedy Bakko powered the Kindred offense, combining for 12 of the team’s 15 first-quarter points. Hi-Liners sophomore Katie Burchill kept Valley City within striking distance, grinding her way to eight points as the Hi-Liners trailed 15-13 heading into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Nipstad continued her strong play, adding six points. The Hi-Liners weathered a prolonged cold stretch on offense, but their defensive tenacity kept the Vikings from pulling away. At halftime, the Hi-Liners were within reach, trailing 23-19.

The Hi-Liners surged in the third quarter, outscoring Kindred 15-10 to take a narrow 35-34 lead. Skye Nielson, who was quiet in the first half with just two points, erupted in the third, finishing the game with 13 points.

The fourth quarter, however, belonged to Kindred. A Nipstad three-pointer and a relentless full-court press sparked a 7-0 Vikings run in less than a minute, giving Kindred breathing room. The Hi-Liners couldn’t regain momentum as Kindred dominated the final frame, outscoring Valley City 23-10 to seal the victory.

The Hi-Liners (0-1) will look to rebound Thursday when they host the Northern Cass Jaguars at 7 p.m.
