O’Neil passed away on January 13, 2024, at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.
O’Neil Delano Oppegaard was born on March 31, 1933, to Olaf and Marie (Strand) Oppegaard in Litchville, ND. After completing his education, he began working for a local carpenter, where he developed his skills in carpentry. O’Neil later moved to Valley City, where he worked for Berge Construction and Wick Construction, eventually spending several years building homes. He retired after working at Valley City State University for many years.
On February 27, 1960, O’Neil married Janice Olson at First Lutheran Church in Valley City. As a wedding gift to Janice, he built a new home on the hillside. Later, he constructed another home near a school for their daughter, Elizabeth, which was conveniently located across the road.
In his retirement, O’Neil pursued woodworking and took classes in wood turning. He spent countless hours in his workshop crafting clocks, vases, pens, and other items, which he generously gifted to family and friends. He also loved spending time at the lakes fishing. O’Neil taught his wife and daughter to fish, and they enjoyed the pastime together. The family cherished over 50 years of memories at Toad Lake in Minnesota.
O’Neil was a former member of the National Guard and a long-standing member of the Eagles and Faith Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wallace and Marvin; and sisters, Evelyn, Marlene, and Nordis.
O’Neil is survived by his wife, Janice; daughter, Elizabeth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
