JAMESTOWN – On a day where Jamestown Blue Jays Boys Hockey could use a win, Nate Walz made sure it happened.
Walz had a hat trick and an assist Friday as Jamestown defeated Bottineau/Rugby for the second time this season 5-2 at Wilson Arena.
Jamestown (6-3-0-1, 5-3-0-1 West), who had lost Tuesday at Legacy due to a late flurry by the Sabers, scored first, thanks to Walz at 3:55 in the first period. He was assisted by Jackson Maddock and Parker Roelfsma. Kahliel Abdurraham scored at 6:39 and Bottineau/Rugby (3-5-2-0, 3-3-1-0) was even at 1-1 after the first period.
Grady Glasner gave the Braves the lead at 3:28 of the second, but Roelfsma then tied the game for the Blue Jays, set up by Maddock and Walz, at 5:45. Walz tallied at 10:49, assisted by Bennett Goehner, and Jamestown led 3-2 through two periods.
John Belzer scored 3:56 into the third period for a 4-2 Blue Jay lead with another Goehner helper. Walz completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal with four seconds left after Jamestown had killed off a five-minute major penalty.
Jamestown had a 36-28 shot advantage. Cooper Kirkeby made 26 saves in the Blue Jay net.
The Blue Jays will play at Dickinson on Saturday.
