VALLEY CITY N.D. – Mayville State University secured a pair of decisive wins over Valley City State University on Saturday, with both the men’s and women’s basketball teams surpassing the 90-point mark.

In the women’s game, senior guard Mackenzie Hughes put on a stellar performance for the Comets, scoring 37 points. Jes Mertens came close to a triple-double, tallying 21 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. While three of the game’s four quarters were tightly contested, the Comets seized control in the second quarter, outscoring the Vikings 24-11 to establish a commanding lead. VCSU’s Jaycee Richter led her team with 21 points and 12 rebounds, but her effort wasn’t enough to prevent Mayville State from earning a 90-73 victory.

The men’s game featured balanced scoring from the Comets, as six players reached double figures. Lamar Grayson (23 points) and Shaheed Muhammad (25 points) paced the Vikings, with LaDarious Stanfield adding 13 points. Despite a late push by VCSU to narrow the gap, the Comets maintained control throughout the second half and secured a 93-82 win.

Both VCSU teams return to action on January 17, traveling to Dickinson State to face the Blue Hawks.
