VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) Day two of the Barnes County Boys Basketball tournament saw a pair of upsets, with a six-seed advancing to Saturday’s title tilt.
Game 6: #3 Maple River 68, #7 Enderlin 27
The Raiders bounced back from some opening round offensive woes, taking a big lead early, then surviving a mini-Eagle run that reduced a 15-point edge to nine in the second quarter. Maple River then held Enderlin to just eight second-half points.
Maple River shot 45% for the game, while forcing 26 Enderlin turnovers. The Raiders also grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Eagles 41-20.
Carter Baasch led four Raiders in double figures with 20 points. Tee Sylling added 14, Colbe Weshnevski 13, and Damien Norrie 11. Aiden Chamberlain scored nine to lead Enderlin.
Game 7: #1 Valley City 50, #4 May-Port CG 40.
The Hi-Liners took a 15-point lead into the locker room, then withstood a Patriot comeback that cut the lead to as few as five before rallying for a 10-point win.
Miken Mattson and Jack Dieterle fueled the build up in the opening half. Mattson scored 10 in the second quarter, while Dieterle had a nine point, nine rebound first half of play. Dieterle finished with his second double-double of the tournament, scoring 11 and grabbing 15 rebounds.
Bryson Heck then led the Hi-Liners to a strong finish, scoring 13 of his team-high 17 after the break.
Noah Djibonon again paced the Patriots with a 19 point, 10 rebound night.
Game 8: #6 Barnes County North 38, #2 LaMoure-LM 31
Despite forcing 22 turnovers and grabbing 19 offensive rebounds, the Loboes could not overcome one of the most sluggish shooting nights in recent memory. LaMoure-LM shot 15% in the first half, and ended at 19.7% for the game, at one point trailing by 17, before cutting the lead to as few as six down the stretch.
The Bison repeatedly used a high-low game in the opening half to sting the Loboes, then weathered a fierce defensive onslaught that held Bison shooting to just one field goal in the fourth quarter.
Parker Amann led the Bison with 11 points and 14 rebounds. James Jewett knocked in 10 points and had 8 rebounds.
Brayan Karlgaard led the Loboes with 11 points.
With #8 White Shield upsetting #5 Wyndmere-Lidgerwood in the consolation semifinals, the stage is set for Saturday. W-L will face Enderlin for seventh place. White Shield plays Maple River for the consolation title. LaMoure-LM will face MPCG for third, and Valley City and Barnes County North will match up in the championship game.
