carrington-16

THOMPSON (NewsDakota)- If you are Class A’s third-ranked team and hosting Carrington on a Friday night, it appears you are in danger.  For a second consecutive Friday night, the Carrington Cardinals defeated the state’s third-ranked team on the road, this time over Thompson 64-63 in a Region II matchup on Friday night.

The game could not have started much worse for Carrington as the Tommies (4-2, 1-1) led 7-0 immediately, but that was the largest lead Thompson would hold and by the end of the quarter the Cardinals led 16-15.  Carrington (5-1, 3-1) would earn their largest lead in the second quarter at 31-23 before a 9-2 run for the Tommies made it 33-32 at the half.

The second half saw two ties and four lead changes as the game came down to the final three seconds.  With the game tied at 63 and after a Tommies turnover, Carrington’s Edyn Hornaert was fouled on a three-point attempt with :01 left.  The senior missed the first two before making the third to clinch the victory.  Senior Kaydence VanRay scored thirteen of her fifteen after halftime.

It was the first Region loss for Thompson since a loss on February 9, 2023 to May-Port CG, the first home loss since January 29th, 2022 (Kindred 71-56) and first home loss in a region game since January 19, 2021 (Grafton 75-54).

Carrington is back in action in the Carrington Shootout on Friday against Hazen with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at 4:15 PM
