DEVILS LAKE (NewsDakota): When playing the defending state champions on their home floor, to pull an upset you almost have to be flawless. And for one half on Monday night, Carrington was just that. But a big turnaround in a 29-7 third quarter led the Devils Lake Firebirds to a 62-39 win over the Cardinals on Monday night in Devils Lake.
Carrington (4-1, 2-1) started well, including cutting a six point deficit to two after shortly before the end of the first quarter. And the second quarter was even better, as the Cardinals held the Firebirds (3-0, 1-0) to just five points in taking a 26-23 halftime lead.
But Devils Lake’s pressure got to Carrington in the decisive third quarter as the Cardinals had double digit turnovers in that frame alone, most of which live-ball turnovers leading to fastbreak points. Edyn Hornaert led a balanced effort with eight points. Claire Heilman led the Firebirds with 11 off the bench.
Carrington continue Region II play on the road Friday night at Thompson. Coverage on KDAK The Cardinal begins at approximately 5:45 PM.
