JAMESTOWN – Wilson Arena was the site of the home opener for Jamestown Blue Jay Boys hockey Tuesday night against Bismarck Legacy in the home debut of new head coac,h and former Blue Jay Jake Stilwell.
The home fans went home happy as Jamestown pulled off a 3-2 victory in dramatic fashion as senior Jacoby Traut scored a shorthanded goal with 52 seconds remaining that snapped a 2-2 tie.
The Blue Jays looked to be in trouble when junior Gavin Schafer was whistled for a five-minute boarding penalty with 2:25 remaining in regulation but Traut saved the day with his first goal of season when he tracked down a loose puck at center ice and beat Legacy senior goalie Tristan Otto on the stick side.
Junior Max Whitman scored his first of the season for Jamestown and he also assisted on a goal. Schafer scored his first of the season early in period three that gave the Jays a 2-1 lead.
Jamestown sophomore goalie Leif Hanson was outstanding in net with 31 saves, many at point blank range, as the Jays were outshot 33-20.
The Blue Jays improved to 2-0-0-0 in the season and Legacy slipped to 1-2-0-0.
Next up for the Jays is a West Region game at Bottineau/Rugby on Friday.
