JAMESTOWN – Two first period goals by Ainsley Johnson put Legacy ahead to stay in a 5-2 girls hockey win Tuesday over the Jamestown Blue Jays at Wilson Arena in the Jays’ home opener.
Avary Sick opened the scoring for Legacy (1-2-0-0) at 8:54 of the first period, but Anna Lunde evened the game on a breakaway at 10:44 for Jamestown (1-1-0-0).
Johnson’s goals then came at 12:51 and 14:29 of the first period and Legacy led 3-1 after 17 minutes.
Madison Flemmer extended the Sabers’ lead to 4-1 with the only second period goal.
Layni Bakalar completed a nice end-to-end rush with 7:34 left in the third period for her first goal and Jamestown trailed just 4-2, but Legacy made the final margin three when Mya Paul was awarded a goal after being tripped up on a breakaway by the Jays’ Ellie Krueger with 1:52 left.
Avery Graves made 20 saves in net for Jamestown. Legacy had a 25-14 shot advantage. The Blue Jays were scoreless on four powerplay chances.
Jamestown will play Century Tuesday at the VFW Sports Center in Bismarck.
