MINOT – Caleb Van De Griend had a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead five double-figure scorers Thursday as Minot State Men’s Basketball held off Jamestown 86-74 at the Minot State Dome.
Jaxon Gunville hit five three-pointers and scored 15 for Minot State (6-0). Sam West and Ayouba Berthe each scored 13 and Jalen Cook had 12.
Silas Bennion scored 19 points for Jamestown (2-4). Anthony Walters tallied 18 and hit four three-pointers. Jimmy Llinas had 14 points on seven-of-nine shooting on eight rebounds.
In the first 1:59 of the game, Minot State opened a 10-0 lead over the Jimmies. Cook scored five points in that run. A Van De Griend layup made the Beaver lead 21-5 just about eight minutes into the game. Llinas scored eight points in an 11-3 run to end the half and bring Jamestown within 38-30.
A three-pointer by Bennion brought UJ within two at 55-53 for Minot State with 12:30 remaining. After an 19-7 run by the Beavers, the home team led 74-60 with 6:15 to go following a three-pointer by Gunville. Jamestown was no closer than nine points for the rest of the game.
Both teams shot well. Minot State was 54 percent from the floor and Jamestown shot 48 percent. The Beavers were nine-of-21 on three-pointers and the Jimmies were 10-of-22.
Jamestown will host Northern State at Harold Newman Arena on Saturday. Coverage will begin at 5:30 PM on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
