LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – Orianna Borrome scored the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute Saturday and the University of Jamestown survived a last-minute penalty kick to defeat Carolina University 2-1 in the quarterfinal round of the Continental Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship at the Grizzly Soccer Complex at Georgia Gwinnett College.
Borrome scored her second of the season, assisted by Hillary Hernandez, only 22 seconds after Ashley Sanchez had tied the game for Carolina (5-6-5).
Then, Jamestown (10-7-0) nearly gave Carolina a chance to force overtime. In the 90th minute, a foul led to a penalty kick for Carolina. However, the Bruins’ Sarah Walters hit the crossbar and the Jimmies held on.
Hannah Hynek scored her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute, set up by Bella Perez, to give UJ a 1-0 halftime lead.
Allyson Johnson made two saves in the Jimmies’ goal as Jamestown allowed only three shots on target and eight overall. Jamestown had 14 shots and eight on goal.
The Jimmies will play Monday in the semifinal round against Bellevue. The teams split their two regular season matches, with the Bruins winning in Jamestown 3-1 on October 5 and the Jimmies taking a 3-2 victory at Bellevue on October 19.
