This year’s Minnesota State Fair was a vibrant showcase of talent and hard work, with over 4,300 4-H members from across the state participating. These young individuals displayed an array of projects, from livestock to leadership, demonstrating the diverse interests and skills developed through the 4-H program.

Among the participants, 2,600 had the exciting opportunity to present their livestock during the fair’s first weekend. Early risers like Alexis from Todd County and Daniel from Morrison County moved their animals into the fairgrounds, setting the stage for a weekend filled with both fun and challenges. Alexis shared, “My favorite thing to do at the state fair is show at the coliseum.”

The fair wasn’t just about showing animals. Makenna from Freeborn County expressed her passion for sheep showing, saying, “I love showing sheep, and it took a lot of hard work and time to get her here, but when you put all that work in and get to the state fair, it just makes it all better.” Her efforts culminated in a proud moment as she recalled, “My favorite memory is shaking the judge’s hand after receiving third.”

Amy, representing Mower County, showcased her versatility by bringing a Holland Lop rabbit and participating in llama and general project areas. Her commitment to 4-H was evident as she exclaimed, “I got a callback for showmanship in which I got a blue, and then my rabbit got Grand Champion in my category along with being able to be the best in show.”

The fair also served as a platform for youth to step up their leadership roles. Cora, a Stearns County participant, highlighted her journey in 4-H, saying, “I was looking for the next step in my 4-H career… It’s rewarding and you get to learn something along the way.”

Meanwhile, Luke from Rice County, a first-year Minnesota 4-H Agriculture Ambassador, emphasized the broader impact of 4-H beyond agriculture, stating, “Just being a 4-H member gives us so many opportunities to develop leadership skills or develop skills in really any area.”

Through their participation in the Minnesota State Fair, these young 4-H members not only showcased their projects but also their growth as individuals. The event underscored the significant role that 4-H plays in nurturing diverse talents and fostering educational enrichment among youth.
