DRISCOLL, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A crash involving a semi-truck, two passenger vehicles, and a group of escaped cattle resulted in multiple injuries and the deaths of 25 cattle early Monday morning on I-94 near Driscoll.

At approximately 1:00 a.m., cattle from a nearby pasture, owned by Gerald Schmidt, 60, of Bismarck, wandered onto I-94 at Exit 190. The cattle had congregated under the overpass, leading to a series of collisions involving a semi-truck and two passenger vehicles.

A 2011 Peterbilt truck-tractor, driven by Ewert Nel, 57, of Edmore, ND, struck the cattle while traveling eastbound. The impact caused the semi to overturn in the median and ignite a small fire, which was quickly extinguished. Nel was unharmed in the incident.

Shortly after, a 2024 Ford Escape driven by Kaycee Anderson, 26, of Napoleon, ND, also struck the cattle. Anderson sustained minor injuries, including cuts and bruises, and was transported to Sanford Medical Center for treatment.

A westbound 2014 Ford Fusion, driven by Dina Diamanti, 41, of Bigelow, MN, with three passengers — Anderson Casteava, 20, a 13-year-old female, and a 16-year-old male — also collided with the cattle. All four individuals were transported to CHI/St. Alexius Medical Center with possible minor injuries.

The crash resulted in the deaths of 25 cattle, which obstructed both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-94. Authorities from the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office, North Dakota DOT, Sterling Fire Department, and Kidder County Rural Fire responded to the scene.

Traffic was diverted onto the exit ramp, over the overpass, and back down onto the interstate, with the westbound lane reopening at 5:05 a.m. and the eastbound lane at 6:05 a.m. The crash remains under investigation.

Authorities have not filed charges against any of the drivers involved in the accident.
