JAMESTOWN – As the Jamestown Blue Jays saw it, the mistakes and the struggling offense would surely end in the Homecoming clash with rival Valley City.  It didn’t, and it led to the Hi Liners taking the Iron Helmet Trophy.

Valley City held off Jamestown 10-9 Friday at Rollie Greeno Field at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium for the Hi Liners’ second win over the Blue Jays in three seasons.

Bryson Heck scored the game’s first points for Valley City (2-3, 1-0 AA West) with 3:47 remaining in the first quarter on a 35-yard field goal.

Jamestown (2-3, 0-1) fumbled the ball away on the first play of their next possession, leading to a three-play scoring drive that ended with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Heck to Caden Amann and Valley City led 10-0 with 2:09 left in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, Jamestown had its best drive of the game, scoring on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Kallenbach to Caleb Schiele to cut the VC lead to 10-6 with 8:44 to play in the first half.  Brady Harty then missed the extra point wide left.

Harty later hit a 29-yard field goal with 1:40 left in the first half for what turned out to be the game’s final points.

Jamestown had two chances in the fourth quarter to grab the lead.  One was thwarted on a fake field goal.  Schiele, the holder, tried to find Max Rittenbach in the end zone, but Valley City’s Parker Amann batted the ball away, nearly into the arms of another Blue Jay.  But the pass fell incomplete and the Hi Liners took over.

With 1:44 left, the Blue Jays again drove deep into Valley City territory and faced fourth down.  However, Harty’s 37-yard field goal attempt was blocked and the Hi Liners ran out the clock.

Jamestown will next play Friday night at Dickinson.  Coverage will begin at 6:30 on The Voice of the Blue Jays, Jamestown 107.1.
