Ellendale, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornados picked up their 2nd District win of the season as they beat cross county rivals the Ellendale Cardinals in 5 sets (23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11).

The match was an intense affair from beginning to end. Set 1 started with 3 ties as  Oakes and Ellendale would trade points till 3-3. The Cardinals would then claim a 8-4 lead which would end up being the largest lead of the set. The lead would be slowly cut away as Oakes would tie it again at 17-17 and take the lead at 19-18. The lead would trade back and forth till the Cardinals took the lead at 23-22 a lead they would not give back up and after 9 ties and 5 lead changes Ellendale would win 25-23.

The match would continue its intensity in set 2 with 6 ties within the first 16 points played being tied at 8-8. The Tornadoes would then take the lead and eventually take a 18-13 lead a lead they’d extend to 6 with the score at 21-15. The lead would be cut away being cut down all the way to 23-21. Oakes would end up winning however by a final of 25-21.

Oakes would take a 11-5 lead early in set 3 a lead they would not be able to hold onto as the Cardinals would eventually catch up and take the lead at 16-15. The lead would flip back and forth twice more. With Ellendale holding onto the lead from 19-18 till 23-23 after having a 3 point lead. Oakes couldn’t keep up the pressure as Ellendale would take the next 2 points winning 25-23.

Ellendale got off to a promising start in set 4 taking a 7-2 lead early. The lead would quickly evaporate however as Oakes would tie it at 7-7 then take the lead at 9-8 a lead they’d hold for good the rest of the way through the state as points would, for the most part, be traded back and forth. Oakes would win 25-19 forcing a set 5.

In the race for 15 it’d be back and forth all the way till an Oakes lead at 6-5 the early set say 5 ties and 4 lead changes. Oakes would build a 11-8 lead and hold onto it to win 15-11.

Oakes rises to 2-1 in District 5 and is now in a 3 way tie for 1st inside of the District with LaMoure-LM and EKM.
