JAMESTOWN – James Poole scored 1:37 into overtime Wednesday to give the University of Jamestown ACHA Division 2 men’s hockey team a 4-3 win over North Dakota State in the season opener at Wilson Arena.
Poole, as he cut into the slot, took a left-wing feed from Alek Erichuk and deposited a wrist shot into the upper right hand corner of the net past Bison goalie Brody Hillstrom.
Quite a flurry finished the third period. Brooks Roaldson gave the Jimmies a 3-2 lead with only 1:21 left, but 47 seconds later, Jacob Pierson completed a hat trick for NDSU.
Pierson had scored a powerplay goal at 14:36 of the first period, but Jamestown scored twice in just over two minutes early in the second. Tyler Ralph scored at 1:49, followed by a Spencer Schipferling powerplay goal at 3:49 for a 2-1 UJ lead.
Pierson’s second for NDSU at 9:13 of the middle period tied the game at 2-2.
Xavier Baker made 31 saves in net for Jamestown, who outshot NDSU 40-34.
Next for the Jimmies will be back-to-back games with Waldorf in Forest City, Iowa on September 27 and 28.
