JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Over the past several days, the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP), in collaboration with various local law enforcement agencies, carried out targeted sobriety enforcement efforts in Stutsman and Cass counties. The operations aimed to reduce impaired driving and enhance road safety across the state.
Stutsman County Sobriety Checkpoint
On Friday, August 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the NDHP and Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Stutsman County Road 42. A total of 75 vehicles were stopped at the checkpoint. Three drivers were evaluated for impairment, but no arrests were made.
However, one driver received a citation for having an open container in their vehicle. Additionally, a vehicle that attempted to evade the checkpoint was stopped for speeding at 107 miles per hour in a 65-mph zone. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving under suspension and cited for driving without insurance.
Cass County Sobriety Checkpoint
On August 29, a similar operation was carried out near North Dakota State University (NDSU) on 12th Avenue North in Fargo. This effort involved the NDHP, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, NDSU Police Department, and Fargo Police Department. Nursing staff from Essentia Health and representatives from Vision Zero were also on-site to provide educational materials to drivers about the dangers of driving under the influence.
During the checkpoint, 16 drivers were tested for impairment, resulting in one DUI arrest. Four additional citations were issued for drug-related offenses. Following the checkpoint, the NDHP conducted a saturation patrol, leading to two more DUI arrests.
Continued Commitment to Road Safety
These enforcement efforts highlight the ongoing commitment of North Dakota law enforcement agencies to ensuring public safety on the roads. By conducting sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, the NDHP and its partners aim to deter impaired driving and reduce the risk of traffic accidents.
