CHADRON, NE – Jamestown held on with an opportunistic defense and held on until Chadron State attacked.

Two touchdowns in less than two minutes early in the fourth quarter led Chadron State to a comeback 17-10 win over the Jamestown Jimmies Thursday at Elliot Field at Don Beebe Stadium.

The Jimmies (0-2) held the lead until the final period, despite a sputtering offense, by forcing six turnovers.

Chadron State (1-1) also struggled on offense until completing an 80-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Sprague to Jamahd Monroe with 12:48 remaining to tie the game at 10-10.

Jamestown couldn’t move the ball on the ensuing possession and looked to punt while deep in their own end of the field.  But a snap sailed over the head of punter Ethan Lieb and was recovered in the end zone by the Eagles’ Rylan Wehr.  Chadron State led 17-10 with 11:14 remaining.

With their last possession, Jamestown drove the ball from their five yard line to the Chadron State 40 before Dax Yeradi intercepted a John Grann pass to seal the victory for the Eagles with 55 seconds to go.

The first Jamestown takeaway ended the first Chadron State possession when Parker Chafee intercepted a Miguel Larios pass with just over nine minutes left in the first quarter.

After a Jimmie punt, Chadron State running back Jake Marschall fumbled the ball at the Jamestown 32.  Chafee then scooped the ball up and ran it back 68 yards for his first UJ touchdown and Jamestown led 7-0 with 3:17 to go in the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, it appeared that Chadron State’s Brodie Roden had an 87-yard runback touchdown.  But after a replay review, officials ruled that Roden had put his arm in the air before the ball arrived to signal for a fair catch and nullify the score.

Four minutes into the second quarter, Jamestown’s Mason Parker intercepted Sprague, but the Jimmies went three-and-out.

Chadron State drove to the Jimmies’ eight, but then tried a fake field goal and Chafee stopped holder Brodie Eisenbraun for a loss.

After Jamestown’s offense went three-and-out again, a sack by Parker turned into a fumble recovery by Jed Rantz and the Jimmies held on to their 7-0 lead at halftime.

Chadron State’s mistakes continued as the second half began.  Roden didn’t reach Jamestown’s opening kickoff before the Jimmies’ Colton Schneider did and Jamestown started at the Eagles’ 20.

Again, the offense was held, but Aanon Peterson kicked his 21st career field goal from 32 yards and Jamestown led 10-0 1:37 into the third quarter.

On their next drive, Chadron State held the football for nearly seven minutes before Wilson Yee kicked a 21-yard field goal to cut Jamestown’s lead to 10-3 with 6:33 left in the third quarter.

Jamestown was held to one first down and only 43 yards of offense in the first half.  For the night, UJ gained only 114 yards total and was held to 51 plays from scrimmage, compared to 75 for Chadron State.

Gavin Blomdahl led Jamestown in rushing with 39 yards on 12 carries.  Grann was 13-of-24 for 78 yards.

Marschall rushed for 110 yards for Chadron State and Rylan Aguallo added 79.

The remainder of Jamestown’s regular season play will be in the North Star Athletic Association, starting with Dakota State in Madison, South Dakota on Saturday, September 14.  Coverage will begin at 3:30 PM on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
