After sweeping through doubles, the Shanley Deacons were able to stem the tide of a Valley City rally to capture a 6-3 win on Tuesday.

Valley City would manage to take three of the six singles matchups, including reaching a match point in a fourth game, but they couldn’t overcome their early deficit. Once again, the Hi-Liners proved their mettle in close matchups, going 2-1 in matches that went at least three sets.

One of those matchups was the top singles matchup between Hi-Liner Miles Taylor and Shanley’s Jack Bier. Taylor came out hot in the singles going up 5-0 in the first set, before Bier came back to make it 5-4 before Taylor finished off the set. Bier was the more consistent player in the second set, forcing a super tiebreaker. Despite inconsistencies with his shot placement, Taylor still found a way to win a tight super tiebreaker.

Hi-Liners Head Coach Matt Neilson gave some brief thoughts after the first couple of games this season. “So far, we had two very competitive matches.  Thursday is our home opener and it should be another very competitive match against Fargo South.  We lost to them by scores of 5-4 and 3-2 last year.”
