Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) – Oakes High School flooded the morning of August 15th after rainfall hit Oakes. The flooding was discovered after a janitor came to the school in the early morning hours and opened a door only to have water start pouring out.

The extent of the damage is currently unclear but no class rooms were destroyed in the waters. The flooding appears to have started from the 3rd floor in the High School and flowed down the stairs and halls all the way to the basement. At around 2:00 am a fire alarm appears to have gone off due to malfunction. A cause to the flood waters is still under investigation and is unknown at this time.

Among some of the damage could be some extracurricular supplies such as sports jerseys and prom supplies. The school is taking inventory of what can and cannot be saved for insurance purposes.  A total cost to the damages is still yet to be determined.

Anna Sell, superintendent of the Oakes School District, commends the community and the custodial staff for their help in cleaning up the mess. The floors have mostly been cleaned and the gym floors appear undamaged.

This story is developing and more will be known in the coming days. Anna Sell will be joining Ricky Klaverkamp on Wednesday August 21st for Midweek Focus to talk about the School Board meeting that is happening tomorrow and any news about the flood.

According to NDAWN total rainfall from yesterday in Oakes was 1.8 inches.
