FARGO – Late in the regular season, clutch hits were all too rare for the Jamestown Eagles. On Monday, two clutch hits helped the Eagles to a state tournament win.
Bennett Goehner hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh inning Monday and Jamestown edged Dickinson 6-5 in the opening game of the AA American Legion State Tournament at Starion Bank Field.
Jamestown, the 10th seed, snapped a six-game losing streak that ended the regular season by rallying from a 5-3 deficit.
The Eagles (10-19) scored tying runs in the sixth inning on RBI ground outs by Kaiden Hakanson and Tyson Jorissen.
Preston Gall led off the Jamestown seventh with a double, followed by Goehner’s go-ahead hit.
Kyler Kudrna gave seventh seed Dickinson (12-19) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single.
Jamestown tied the game in the top the second on a run-scoring wild pitch by Dickinson starter Jeremiah Jilek.
In the last of the second, one of four Eagle errors gave the lead back to Dickinson at 2-1.
Then, the first clutch hit for Jamestown gave the Eagles the lead again in the top of the fourth. With two out, Kale Verke walked and Ethan Oettle was hit by a pitch. Thomas Newman then hit a two-run single up the middle and Jamestown led 3-2.
A Newman balk and a sacrifice fly returned the lead to Dickinson, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth before an error scored another Roughrider run in the fifth.
Newman (3-3) pitched a complete game seven-hitter, striking out six.
On Tuesday, Jamestown will play second seed West Fargo. Coverage will begin at around 1:15 on Jamestown 107.1.
