Valley City dropped game one to Wahpeton Post 20 5-2 behind a complete game effort from Wahpeton pitcher Braxton Pauly.

Valley City found themselves with an early lead as they struck early to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Corbyn Powell picked up another RBI, driving in Ethan Miller. However, Post 20 would waste no time getting that run back after Jackson Fliflet laced a two-run shot over the left field fence to give Wahpeton a 2-1 lead.

Valley City starter James Schwehr buckled down after allowing the homerun, not allowing an earned run through the next four innings while registering four strikeouts. Missed opportunities offensively would haunt Valley City, as they left runners on third multiple times and were unable to tie the game up.

After taking on an unearned run at the bottom of the fifth, Wahpeton would push across two more in the sixth, staking them to a 5-1 lead and going into the top of the seventh. Will Schwehr led off the top of the seventh with a double and came around to score after a pair of groundouts. Carver Pederson would line out to the third baseman to end the game, with Wahpeton taking a 5-2 win.

In game two, Valley City would find itself out front early again after pushing across five total runs in the first two innings. Command issues, however, would plague the Post 60 pitching staff throughout the game as Wahpeton used a series of walks and HBP to take a 6-5 lead after the bottom of the fourth chasing Valley City starting pitcher Gavin Gerhardt from the game.

Valley City would tie the game up at six in the top of the sixth after Jack Samuelson laced a double over the head of the left fielder. But another six-inning rally by Wahpeton would put the game out of reach as Will Schwehr could not escape the inning. Seven runs were pushed across in the inning, and they took a 13-6 lead going into the seventh. Valley City would go 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh as Wahpeton picked up the sweep.

Valley City’s next game is Tuesday, July 16th, at 5:30 PM, at home against Lisbon. That game can be heard live on 1490 AM/ 96.3 FM KOVC.
