game-one-run

GRAND FORKS, ND  (NewsDakota.com)  The Jamestown Eagles mustered an unearned run and won a pitcher’s duel in game one, then dropped a second contest to the Grand Forks Royals Friday night.

Thomas Newman twirled a complete game shutout, striking out four in a 1-0 win for the Eagles in game one Friday night.

Preston Gall scored the lone run on a play where he was beaten at the plate by a throw from Grand Forks first-baseman Zander Waind, but catcher Matt Dosch could not hold the ball cleanly on the tag.

Newman pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, and stranded nine Grand Forks runners with terrific defense, including a running catch by Nate Walz in the left-field corner that prevented a run from scoring in the fifth.

Game two saw the Eagles take the early lead, but give up three-run rallies in both the third and fifth innings in a 7-2 loss.

Newman scored an unearned run on a play at the plate in the first, and Tyson Jorissen doubled and scored on Walz’ single in the third, edging the Eagles to a 2-0 lead.

Grand Forks scored three in the third after loading the bases with no one out.  Eagles first-baseman Bennett Goehner suffered a serious injury when a throw drew him in the air and he was clipped down in a collision with Royals’ hitter Gabe Tande.  Goehner was taken off the field by stretcher.

A sacrifice fly by Dosch scored the first run, and back-to-back singles by Braden Brevik and Chance Colgrove delivered the Grand Forks the lead after three at 3-2.  The Royals would strike for three more on a single by Dosch, a Colgrove triple, and a Brevik two-run homer in the fifth.

Grand Forks picked up another run in the sixth.

Jamestown is now 2-8 in league play, and will face Williston on Wednesday at Jack Brown Stadium.  Coverage will begin at 5:15 on Thunder 98.3.
