JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) is hosting Quit Week starting June 9, featuring a range of programs focused on tobacco treatment.
The health benefits of quitting tobacco use are profound. Within just 20 minutes of cessation, blood pressure and heart rate normalize, and circulation improves in the hands and feet. Within 24 hours, the risk of heart attack significantly decreases, and within 48 hours, noticeable improvements in smell and taste occur.
“Treating tobacco use disorder is imperative, as it is a chronic condition requiring ongoing management, similar to hypertension or diabetes,” said Nicole Brandvold, JRMC Respiratory Manager. “Our therapists receive specialized training to evaluate patients properly, provide evidence-based counseling, and connect patients to complementary resources for long-term success.”
JRMC offers comprehensive tobacco treatment services, including counseling and nicotine replacement therapy. Recognizing that no single method is effective for everyone, the NDQuits state program also provides various treatment options, including free counseling and advice. Eligible patients can receive nicotine replacement products at no cost.
Many JRMC respiratory therapists have earned additional certification in tobacco treatment through the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center.
“Our respiratory therapists actively chose to enhance their skills through additional certification, driven by their passion for improving patient outcomes. Witnessing the toll of tobacco use daily, they seek to prevent associated health issues before they emerge,” Brandvold added.
In addition to JRMC’s offerings, the North Dakota Department of Health provides teen-focused resources, including text and chat options with quit coaches at becomeanex.org and teen.smokefree.gov.
