COLFAX, N.D. (NDHP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) said a Day County, South Dakota Ambulance Service ambulance was northbound on I-29 when it caught fire in the northbound lane Satuday, June 8th about 9:15pm. The driver of the ambulance came to stop in lane one and assisted the other EMT in removing a patient from the rear of the ambulance. Both EMT’s and the patient they were transporting were able to safely get away from the ambulance.
The ambulance was a total loss and caused northbound I-29 to be closed for approximately 45 minutes while the fire was put out.
The patient being transported was transferred into the care of a Breckenridge-Wahpeton Ambulance and transferred to Sanford Hospital in Fargo. The condition of the driver and patient has not been released.
