MINOT – Jamestown’s state tournament dreams ended in a tough way Thursday.
Payton Bergeron scored in the sixth round of penalty kicks to give Grand Forks Red River a 2-1 win over Jamestown in the NDHSAA Girls Soccer State Tournament quarterfinal at Duane Carlson Stadium.
Reese Christ scored on a rebound in the eighth minute for the Blue Jays’ goal, but Taylor Hodny tied the match 12 minutes later.
The score remained even through the last 60 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute “golden goal” overtime periods before the match was decided by penalties 4-3 for Red River.
Red River, in the program’s first state tournament appearance since 2014, will play Fargo Davies in a semifinal Friday.
Jamestown (11-4-2) will face Legacy in a consolation game Friday at 2:15 PM.
