BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) has announced the distribution of $200,000 in grants through its Helping Housing Across North Dakota (Helping HAND) program for 2024. This initiative aims to ensure that residents, regardless of their economic circumstances, have access to safe and affordable housing.

“Helping HAND embodies the state’s commitment to ensure that residents, regardless of economic circumstances, have a safe and affordable place to call home,” said Dave Flohr, NDHFA executive director.

Helping HAND grants are provided to community groups with existing single-family housing rehabilitation programs. They play a vital role in assisting households with limited means. To qualify, households must have an income of 80% or less than the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s median for the county in which the home is located. Additionally, matching funds of at least 25% of a rehab project’s total cost are required to access the grant dollars.

Since its inception in 1993, NDHFA’s Helping HAND program has provided over $6.7 million in grants, leveraging more than $50 million and assisting over 8,000 lower-income individuals and families across North Dakota. Roof replacement is the most common type of rehabilitation project funded.

“By addressing critical repair needs like roof repair, the Helping HAND program is ensuring that homes are safe and habitable, improving living conditions and helping to preserve communities and promote economic stability,” said Flohr.

The Helping HAND program is funded through NDHFA’s earnings. Grants are allocated to Community Action Agencies based on poverty level indicators, with dedicated funds earmarked for tribal housing authorities and non-profit organizations.
