Verlyn Francis (Kammerer) Koch was born November 17, 1934, In Valley City, ND, daughter of Alexander and Genevieve (Kramer) Kammerer. She attended all twelve years of her schooling at St. Catherine of VC. She married the love of her life Lloyd Koch on October 25, 1952. They were married for 60 years and to this union 8 children were born.
Verlyn was a member of the Ashtabula Homemakers club from its start, a part of the birthday club in the neighborhood, a member of the Valley City Eagles Auxiliary for 56 years and a member of St. Catherine Church. She was an avid reader, loved crossword and picture puzzles, for many years she made a Christmas “piddles” for each of us. Her social activities included pinochle, cribbage, 31 card game, and Bingo. She collected bells and penguins.
Verlyn and Lloyd raised all the children on the farm, growing a garden, keeping everybody clothed and fed. They taught them how to be a close knit, loving, caring family: leading by example. Verlyn worked as the “Popcorn Lady” for 11 years at the ND Winter Show, she waitressed numerous locations, before retiring from the Sheyenne Care Center in 2000.
Verlyn spent her winters in Mesa, AZ enjoying the beautiful weather, bobbing in the pool, and meeting new friends while sitting in the shade of her patio watching the people go by and stopping to visit. Waiting for the next family to vacation to visit and spend time with her.
Verlyn is survived by her children, Alan (Cindi) Koch, Fargo, ND, Arlana (Scott) Cisinski, Hastings, NE, Gary (Joan) Koch, Oriska, ND, Juleen (Tom) Cruff, Oriska, ND, Glenn (Mary) Koch, Clermont, FL, and Bradley Koch (Melea), Fargo, ND. She also leaves 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, with one more expected in June; daughter-in-law, Arlene Scott, Pueblo, CO; along with, brothers, Monte (CJ) Kammerer, Portland, OR and Lyle (Debra) Kammerer, Portland, OR; sisters-in-law, Ruth (Jerry) Rinker, Franklin, MA and Lillian Kramer, Jamestown, ND; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Lloyd; an infant daughter, Karen Elaine; son, Dr. Marvin Koch; and grandson, Benjamin Lloyd Kuntz; as well as her brother, Darryl Kammerer; and sisters, Arlene Monroe and Lorraine Benzinger.
Verlyn F. Koch, 89, Valley City, ND, passed away May 17, 2024, surrounded by her family while under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 1:00 PM in St. Catherine Catholic Church (540 3rd Ave NE, Valley City). Father Brian Bachmeier and Deacon Eugene Kramer will officiate.
