Two of the top teams in the EDC met up yesterday, as the Valley City Hi-Liners squared off against the Fargo Davies Eagles, with Valley City pulling out the 5-4 win.

Breck Sufficool & Abby Martineck were able to avenge one of only two losses they had as doubles partners last season defeating Paige McCormick & Sofia Summers in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-2). Martineck would also capture a huge singles win for Valley City outlasting Summers to pick up the win (6-3, 6-4) .

The Hi-Liner duo of Kailee Nielson and Georgia Zaun were also able to avenge their loss last year in the state consolation semifinal, defeating Tanis Lee and Grace Wanzek in three sets (1-6, 7-6(1), 6-2). Head Coach Matt Nielson praised his teams resiliency saying “Georgia lifted Kailee up to force a 2nd set tiebreaker. After playing with great emotion in that tiebreak and they came out and dominated the third to avenge that state tournament loss.”

The decisive victory would belong to Georgia Zaun who outlasted Grace Wanzek in singles action (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) to pick-up the all important fifth victory. Nielson couldn’t help but lump praise onto his stellar sophomore after the match sealing win.

“Georgia played consistent from the baseline and then hit placed approach shots once she got a short ball leading to put-a-way volleys or errors by her opponent. She played with confidence. She played under control. She played to win and she did. Georgia has taken a big step in her physical game and mental game. It was fun for our entire team to see Georgia finish off the Hi-Liner win.”

The next match for Valley City will come against the undefeated Deacons of Shanley on Thursday. Shanley and Valley City are both 2-0 on the season. The match will be at Concordia College in Moorhead at 4pm.
