NEW ROCKFORD- Two unearned runs in the top of the first inning was enough as the Carrington Cardinals defeated New Rockford-Sheyenne in their Region III opener on the road 3-1 on Monday night after a 70-minute weather delay.
Grady Shipman and Corbin Clifton each reached on errors by BlackSox (4-1, 1-1) SS Thomas Allmaras and scored to give the Cardinals (2-2, 1-0) a 2-0 first inning lead, and it would hold up as Clifton (1-0) threw four innings of relief, allowing only two hits and a run while punching out three.
Conner Knatterud (2-1) tossed a complete game, allowing only four hits and three runs (one earned) while walking three and striking out six. Grady Shipman earned his first save with back-to-back strikeouts with two on and one out in the seventh.
The Cardinals are scheduled to host LaMoure-LM on Tuesday in the home opener, weather permitting
