ABERDEEN, S.D. (NSU) – The Northern State University Athletic Department and United Way of Northeastern South Dakota are joining efforts to serve the community during the 22nd annual Day of Champions. On Saturday, April 27, the Wolves will make an impact by volunteering their time at several organizations within the Aberdeen area.

The Day of Champions began in 2002 as a collaborative effort between the NSU Athletic Department and the United Way. Over the past 22 years, more than 3,000 Northern student-athletes have worked on over 260 projects, contributing 21,000 hours of labor, which equates to $240,000 worth of donated labor.

“We are thrilled to be a part of such an impactful day,” said Aaron Schultz, Executive Director of United Way. “We look forward to teaming up with the NSU student-athletes and volunteering around the community. It’s always humbling to know how much volunteering your time for just one day can truly make a difference.”

This year, the Wolves will volunteer their time at 24 locations around the Aberdeen area: Aberdeen Area Senior Center, Aberdeen Aqua Addicts Water Ski Team, Aberdeen Community Theatre, Aberdeen Downtown Association, Aberdeen Family YMCA and Youth Development Center, Aberdeen Foster Closet, Aberdeen Gymnastics Association, Aberdeen Ride Line, Avera St. Luke’s, Boys and Girls Club of Aberdeen, Dacotah Prairie Museum, Hub Area Habitat for Humanity, Journey Daycare and Church, Lee Park Golf Course, New Beginnings Center, Northeastern Mental Health Center, Safe Harbor, Sanford Health, SD School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Wylie Park, and the Westport community.

NSU President Neal H. Schnoor stated, “It is a privilege to give back to the Aberdeen community in appreciation for its unparalleled support of our university. I am proud of the NSU student-athletes who are learning through this opportunity while enriching our community.

The Day of Champions is proudly sponsored by NSU Athletics, United Way of Northeastern South Dakota, 3M, Aberdeen Sertoma Club, Dacotah Bank, Eide Bailly, Jimmy Johns, NSU Foundation, QQP, Target of Aberdeen, and Twist Cone.
