After three straight losses, Valley City was looking for a relaxing outing against the six-seeded Broncos in the quarterfinals of the Region One Tournament. Instead, they got four quarters of offensive mayhem as both teams traded buckets for four quarters.
The first quarter would see the welcome sight of Bryson Heck confidentially stroking home a pair of three-pointers as he led the way for Valley City with eight points after one quarter. Unfortunately for Valley City, the rest of the offense would not follow Heck’s lead as Lisbon rode Cameron Cordero’s and Jayden Bittner’s hot shooting to an early 15-14 lead.
The second quarter would see a modest improvement from Valley City offensively as they dropped 17 points as five different Hi-Liners scored in the second frame. Talon Larson would be the primary catalyst for the Hi-Liners in the second, muscling through with eight points. Defensively, the second quarter would be the best for Valley City as they held the Broncos to 11 points, taking a 31-26 lead into the break.
Lisbon’s Jayden Bittner would go from a mild annoyance in the first half to a full-blown problem in the third quarter as repeated trips to the foul line pushed his point total to 15 as the Broncos refused to go away. Luckily for Valley City, they were able to fight fire with even more fire as six players combined to score 23 points in the quarter as Heck and Larson both reached double figures. The weapon of choice for Valley City in the third quarter would be the three-point bomb as they splashed home four of them in the frame as they took a 54-48 lead into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter would see both teams exchange pleasantries for the first six minutes, with neither side surrendering ground to the other. But Valley City would ice the game away at the foul stripe as they would take a 70-60 win to move on to the Region One semifinals.
The next game you can hear on 1490AM/96.3FM KOVC will be Tuesday, as the Hi-Liner Boys will take on the Wahpeton Huskies at approximately 7:45 pm.
