JAMESTOWN – Saturday was very productive for University of Jamestown Basketball.

Jamestown’s men earned a GPAC postseason tournament berth with an 87-77 victory over Midland.

Women: Jamestown 72, Midland 55

Tough first-half defense and a balanced offense led the Jimmies to the season sweep of the Warriors.

Jamestown (15-9, 11-7 GPAC) had a 15-1 lead in the first quarter and held Midland (5-19, 2-16) without a field goal for the first 8:41.  After Midland scored eight straight points, Jamestown then scored 10 straight to lead 25-9 and never trailed by less than nine for the rest of the game, winning for the seventh time in eight games and staying one game out of fourth place in the GPAC.

Kia Tower led the Jimmies with 16 and became the third player in program history to score 1,700  points.  Kate Cordes scored 14 and knocked down four three-pointers.  Audrey Rodakowski scored 12.  Kate Busek pulled down eight rebounds.

Sankey is 100-73 in his sixth season as the Jimmies’ head coach.  He joins Lawrie Paulson and Greg Ulland as Jamestown women’s basketball head coaches to have at least 100 wins.

Men: Jamestown 87, Midland 77

Antonio Chandler led the way for the Jimmies, starting in place of Jimmy Llinas, who missed the game with a right ankle injury.  Chandler scored 22 points and 11 rebounds on 10-of-13 shooting, including a three-pointer and three dunks.

Cole Woodford scored 20 and hit six three-pointers in 10 tries, including five made threes in the second half.  Colby Vazquez scored 18 off the bench.

Jamestown (13-11, 8-8) trailed by five points early before a 24-6 run put them up by 13 points.  The Jimmies stretched the lead to as much as 23 in the second half over Midland (9-16, 4-13) after having needed a comeback from a 20-point second half deficit for a 109-108 overtime win in Fremont on January 6.

Jamestown will qualify for the men’s postseason tournament for the sixth time in as many seasons in the GPAC.

The Jimmies will play their final regular season road games against Dordt Wednesday in Sioux Center, Iowa.  Coverage will begin at 5:30 PM on Wednesday on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
