JAMESTOWN – University of Jamestown basketball teams have had to show resiliency variously through this season.  On Wednesday, both teams did so again, with one achieving a stirring win.

Jimmie Women’s Basketball, after allowing the first 12 points of the game, rallied to defeat Northwestern 72-71 at Harold Newman Arena.  The Jamestown men cut a 14-point second half deficit to three, but fell short in an 87-82 loss.

Women: Jamestown 72, Northwestern 71

The start couldn’t have gone much worse for the Jimmies, with four turnovers in their first five possessions and Northwestern taking the early big lead.

But UJ eventually cut into the Raider lead, and grabbed it themselves for the first time with just under two minutes left in the first half.  The score was even at 41-41 at halftime.

Northwestern led 69-63 with 4:09 left.  Following that, Kate Cordes hit a three-pointer for Jamestown, then Audrey Rodakowski hit a free throw and a basket for a 69-69 tie.

Northwestern’s Molly Schany scored on a putback with 1:51 to go and the Raiders led 71-69.

Just five seconds later, Cordes’ fifth three-pointer of the game gave UJ a 72-71 advantage.

That score remained with seven seconds left and one last possession for Northwestern.  Jimmies’ extended defense led to a last-second three-point miss by the Raiders’ Maren Nerem.

Rodakowski scored a career-high 25 points for Jamestown (14-9, 10-7 GPAC).  She was 11-of-14 shooting and hit her first seven shots.  Cordes scored 22.  Kia Tower had 14.

Hali Anderson scored 19 for Northwestern (13-10, 9-8).

Men: Northwestern 87, Jamestown 82

Northwestern came from an early eight-point deficit to a nine-point lead late in the first half before Jamestown cut the lead to 48-46 at halftime.

After Jamestown led 53-52 in the first minutes of the second half, Northwestern then put together a 16-3 run, taking the lead eventually up to 14.  The Jimmies closed to within 85-82 with a minute to go and had a chance to tie with eight seconds left, but Silas Bennion missed a three-pointer.

Alex Van Kalsbeek scored 27 points with seven rebounds for Northwestern (18-5, 11-4 GPAC), who moved back into a tie for the conference lead.

Bennion paced Jamestown (12-11, 7-8) with 30 points, but the Jimmies lost for the second straight game.
