Valentine (Val) Welder Jr, 90, of Edgeley, ND passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center in Jamestown, ND.
Val was born April 1, 1933 in Napoleon, ND to Valentine and Clara (Glatt) Welder. The family moved to Edgeley, ND in 1934
He graduated from Edgeley High School in 1951. He was in the National Guard from 1950-1958 and on active duty with the Army in 1951 and 1952.
He attended college at UND Ellendale (State Normal College), Ellendale, ND, graduating in 1958. Then he taught in Rochester, WA and Steele-Dawson, North Dakota before moving to Wyndmere, ND in 1963. Val’s years in Wyndmere were such a special part of his life. He taught and was senior high principal from 1963-1989. He was happy to be very involved in the community and has retained his membership in the American Legion Brown-Nelson post 153 in Wyndmere.
After retiring in 1989, he moved back to his hometown of Edgeley. He enjoyed his early morning walks, driving in the country to check on cattle and crops, playing pinochle, trips to Las Vegas to watch bull riding, fishing trips and watching sports. He was a very social person and loved visiting, teasing and “harassing” his friends and family.
On August 1, 2021, Val moved to Manor St Joseph in Edgeley and enjoyed being part of that community until just before his death.
Val requested to have a closed casket and that instead of flowers all memorial donations be made to Manor St Joseph in Edgeley, North Dakota.
He is survived by two sisters, Delane Scallon, Edgeley, Betty McIntyre, Concord, CA, and many nieces and nephews and their children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 5 sisters, 2 nephews, one niece, and the love of his life, Dolores Berg.
Val requested not to have a prayer service/visitation. His funeral mass will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 11am at the Transfiguration Catholic Church in Edgeley, ND, with a lunch following. Burial will be in the spring at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Edgeley, ND.
