Alfred Lerew, 95, of Jamestown, ND, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the VA Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Alfred was born August 25, 1928, in Jamestown, ND, the son of Samuel and Cecelia (Pesick) Lerew. He began working at a very young age following his brother, Cecil, in milking cows and helping keep heat on through the winters at Don’s Garden Center, walking the tunnels and carrying coal and ash. Al worked alongside his father learning the trade of carpentry. He passed on his strong work ethic to his children, teaching them there was nothing you could not do. Al attended Jamestown High School and was inducted into the US Army on January 15, 1951. He served in Panama and Greenland before being honorably discharged on November 16, 1952. Al worked in California for a short time and then moved back to North Dakota to work for Art Lee to learn the trade of masonry and construction. Alfred was married Darlene McIntyre on December 26, 1958 in Jamestown. Al worked for Hazen Construction and Moline Construction in Jamestown as a foreman, and later for Misner Construction on Bismarck. Some of the buildings he worked on in Jamestown were the Tempo building, the Jamestown Middle School, and Roosevelt Elementary. He started Lerew Masonry and was owner & operatory until his retirement.

Al enjoyed making keepsakes and woodworking, as well as gardening and growing the largest vegetables possible. He was a member of the AMVETS, Eagles, Elks, and American Legion.

He is survived by his children, Thomas (Joann Turnbull) Lerew of San Antonio, TX, Steve (Connie) Lerew of Hunter, ND and Teresa (Gary) Housh of West Fargo, ND and two grandchildren, Kelsey (Andrew) Kohler of Ames, Iowa and Brandon Lerew of Moorhead, MN.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Cecil, Donald, Ken, and Samuel; and sisters, Gertrude, Leona, Lillian, and Mae. He was proud to have been the longest living member of his family at 95 years, 4 months, and 10 days.

Funeral Service – 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 8, 2024 at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, with Pastor Bryce Tahran officiating.

Visitation – One hour before the service at the funeral home.

Burial – Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
