Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) – In a jam packed Oakes South Gymnasium the Oakes Girls got the night started with a victory over Ellendale. Then the Boys capped off the night with their first regular season victory over Ellendale since the 2011-12 season earning the Cowbell for the first time since then.
Girls Game: Oakes 41 – 38 Ellendale
The first game of the night was a close one as the Cardinals and Tornadoes traded punches throughout the first quarter with an 11-10 Cardinal lead after one. That lead was expanded in the 2nd thanks to Ellendale shooting 6/9 from the field while Oakes only went 3/10 from the field in the quarter. At the half it was 26-18 Ellendale.
The Cardnals were using Kali Norton throughout the first half to rack up the points however Oakes was able to shut her down in the second half and used a 5/9 3rd quarter to get themselves back in the game. The 4th was back and forth the entire time until the end when Oakes finally pulled away for the 41-38 victory.
Leading all around scoring was Kali Norton who had 18 points on the night and went 5/8 from the field and 7/10 from the charity stripe. Next was Ariel Hagen who had 12 points and went 6/11 from the field. Leading Oakes scoring was Molly Sitzler who had 9 and went 2/7 from the field and 5/6 from the stripe.
Molly Sitzler was named the Bank North Player of the Game.

Cowbell Game: Oakes 58 – 54 Ellendale
In the 78th Annual Cowbell Game Oakes brought home the Cowbell for the first time in 12 years. This is Oakes’ 33rd time winning the Cowbell. The game started with Oakes coming out firing earning themselves a 10-2 lead at one point. In the first quarter they’d go 8/10 from the field with three different players getting 3-pointers. The quarter would end with Oakes up 19-12. The second quarter saw Oakes keep up the momentum with Trey Skoglund going 3/3 in the quarter they’d expand the lead out to 33-23. In the half Oakes went 13/19 from the field and only 2/6 from the charity stripe. Ellendale on the otherhand went 7/16 from the field and 8/11 from the stripe.
The 3rd quarter was Ellendale’s rise to prominence as they used Anton Geller and Mason Molan to their fullest to cut the lead down to 7 going 5/10 from the field and only allowing Oakes to go 2/6. The score after 3 would be 42-35. The final quarter was a back and forth affair with the Cardinals constantly challenging for the lead but Oakes keeping it just out of reach. Ellendale would cut the lead down to 2-3 points multiple times but Oakes would remain just ahead in the end. Oakes would have 4 different players with 4 fouls each at the end of the game but they would hold on for the 58-54 victory with Beau Thorpe icing it with a free throw with 2.9 seconds left to give them the 2 possesion lead.
The leading scorer all around was Anton Geller who had 22 points going 7/15 from the field and 5/7 from the stripe. Next was Trey Skoglund who went 6/6 from the field and 6/11 from the stripe for a total of 20 points. Mason Molan also had double digit scoring with 17 points going 7/11 from the field and 1/1 from the stripe.
The Bank North Player of the Game was Trey Skoglund.
Oakes rises to 2-1 on the season while Ellendale falls to 0-2. Next up for Oakes is Battle Lake on Saturday December 16th in Jamestown.
