The Jamestown High School volleyball team matched up with WF Sheyenne in the Class A State Tournament Semifinal today. Jamestown is the 2nd seed in the west, while WF Sheyenne is the 1st seed in the east.
In the first set, Jamestown and WF Sheyenne would go back and forth until Kinley Anderson would get a pair of kills and a block to go along with some help from Leah Trumbauer who also would get a pair of kills to give Jamestown a 12-9 lead. Makenna Nold and Kendyl Anderson would each add a kill to give the Blue Jays a 16-10 lead. But the Mustangs would spark a comeback off the backs of Izzy Albrecht and company. Albrecht would earn a pair of kills and Mia Engel would earn one as well to cut the lead to 16-14.
Nold would respond with a kill to make it 17-14, but Albrecht responded right back with a kill of her own. Nold would get another kill and Mya Bloedow would respond with a block to make it 18-16. A couple of plays later, Addison Marker would earn her first kill of the evening to give the Blue Jays a 20-18 lead. Bloedow would get a kill and then a service ace to tie it up at 20-20. They would trade points again to be tied at 22-22. A lift violation was called on Jamestown, and then Cora Metcalf would get a kill to make it 24-22. Nold would respond with a kill to make it 24-23 but Albrecht would finish the set off with a kill to get the first set victory 25-23.
In the 2nd set, Jamestown would come out swinging for vengeance and would find themselves up 14-13 halfway through the set. That is when Jamestown would turn up the heat on the Mustangs and go on an 11-3 run to finish the set thanks to kills from Trumbauer, Marker, Nold, and 2 aces from Sarah Sletto. Jamestown would win the 2nd set 25-16 off a final kill from Nold.
In the 3rd set, it would be WF Sheyenne who after tying the Blue Jays up at 5-5 would take back the lead and hold on to it the rest of the set. The Mustangs would be up 14-10 before Albrecht and Nold would exchange kills back and forth. Albrecht would score the 15th,16th, and 17th points for the Mustangs while Nold would score the 11th, 12th, and 13th points for Jamestown. 17-13 would be the score and WF Sheyenne would extend their lead on a team effort from Bloedow, Alexa Killoran, Jaida Langlois, and Peyton Saxlund. The set would end in a net violation against the Blue Jays and the Mustangs would win the 3rd set 25-20.
In the 4th and final set, the Mustangs would hold the lead the entire set with Jamestown getting down early 4-1. Nold would have her team’s first 4 points as Jamestown would be down 7-4. Kendyl Anderson would get a kill to cut the deficit to 7-5. A couple of plays later, Sletto would get a service ace to cut the deficit to 8-7 but followed that was a service error, as well as a shot out of bounds that would WF Sheyenne a 10-7 lead. Albrecht and Nold would exchange kills again, but Jamestown couldn’t cut into the deficit and the Mustangs would still lead 13-10. After a few more shots were put out of bounds by Jamestown, Killoran would score a kill along with Langlois to make the score 16-11. Nold would get a kill in response but would also service error to bring the score to 17-12. The Mustangs would extend their lead out to 19-13 before Albrecht would get a kill to make it 20-13. Trumbauer would respond with a kill to make it 20-14 but it would be too little too late as the Mustangs would extend their lead out on kills from Saxlund and Albrecht to give WF Sheyenne a 23-16 lead. Nold would send a shot too strong out of bounds and then would have her next shot blocked by Albrecht to give the Mustangs the final point needed for the win 25-16.
Jamestown will be back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. against the loser of Shanley vs Fargo Davies which is happening currently at the time this article is being written. The match will be for 3rd place in the tournament.
