ELLENDALE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The opening day of the 2023 Class B Region 3 Volleyball tournament was held in Ellendale on Monday with four matches, here are the results:
Carrington 3 Linton/Hazelton/Moffit/Braddock 1 (27-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23)
The Carrington Cardinals defeat the three-time defending Region 3 champs the Lions of L-HMB in the first match Monday, 3-1. The Cardinals are the four seed from District 5, the Lions were the district six champs for the fourth year in a row. Junior Isabel Wendel of the Cardinals got her 1,000th assist in set one, Senior Grace Keeney picked up her 1,000th dig in set four for the Lions. The Lions will end their season at 15-13 overall, Carrington is now 25-10.
Lamoure/Litchville/Marion 3 South Border 0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-16)
The Loboes sweep the Mustangs of South Border for the second time this season and will move into the semifinal Tuesday night against Carrington. In the first set, LLM cruised to victory, sets two and three were a little closer, there were nine ties in set two and six ties in set three, but LLM Loboes had some big kills and aces down the stretch to help them secure the victory. LLM improves to 23-11 overall, SB ends their season at 15-18 overall.
EKM 3 Kidder County 0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-12)
The Rebels swept aside the Wolves as they get back to the Region Semifinals. The Rebels were able to control the pace of play all night long with big leads in each set and coming rather early in each set. In set 1 they took a 14-3 lead before trading points to win 25-9. In set 2 15-6 lead before winning 25-10. In set 3 Kidder took a 4-2 lead before the Rebels came alive and took the lead and the set 25-12. The Rebels rise to 29-4 and remain undefeated in best of 5 play while the Wolves season comes to a close with a record of 16-17.
Oakes 3 MPB 1 (28-26, 25-15, 32-34, 25-23)
The Oakes Tornadoes are back into the Region 3 Semifinals for the 8th straight year as they beat the Thunder in a hard fought match. The first set was back and fourth the entire way 13 ties and 8 lead changes for the Tornadoes 28-26 win. Set two was more comfortable for Oakes as they jumped on MPB after 9-9 to take a 18-14 lead. They would win set two 25-15. In set 3 it was insane. The set featured 16 ties and 10 lead changes as MPB won 34-32. In set 4 it was more of the same after an Oakes 9-3 lead evaporated there was 10 ties and 8 lead changes as Oakes won 25-23. The Tornadoes rise to 19-11 while the Thunder’s season ends with a record of 23-10.
