VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) The Viking basketball teams were impressive at home Wednesday night, sweeping the University of Minnesota-Morris.
The Viking women scored a 77-62 win to start the night, with the Viking men following up with an 83-49 win over the Cougars
WOMEN: VCSU 77, UM-MORRIS 62
The Vikings used an aggressive half-court trap to open up a 16-point lead just after halfitme, only to surrender an 11-0 run, cutting the lead to five, then seeing the lead fall to 36-32 after a three-point play by Morris forward Grace Perry.
Katie Johnson would respond for the Vikings with four three-point shots and five field goals in the third quarter, on her way to a co-game high 18, and Ashlyn Diemert added three third-quarter threes to rebuild the lead.
Johnson’s 18 co-led all scorers. Adrianna Torres added 12, Diemert tossed in 11, and Hailey Roberts added 10.
MEN: VSCU 83, UM-MORRIS 49
The Vikings saw 48 points from their bench and seven different players hit three-point shots on the way to a 30-point lead early in the second half in the rout of the Cougars.
Cleveland Bedgood was pressed into service early due to foul trouble, and scored 16 points in just 14 minutes, still hobbled by a pre-season injury. Ladarious Stanfield added 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.
The Viking defense forced 21 turnovers and held Morris to 3-24 shooting from the three-point line.
Both teams travel to Mount Marty and Dakota Wesleyan next weekend.
