The Jamestown High School football team traveled to Cushman Field tonight in the quarterfinals of the Class AA playoffs to take on Grand Forks Red River (GFFR). The Blue Jays were the 6th seed, and the Roughriders were the 3rd seed. Back in week 1 Jamestown lost to GFFR 28-33. Back then the Roughriders did have a game under their belt while it was the Blue Jays first game of the season.
Fast forward to today, the Roughriders would get on the scoreboard first on a 2-yard touchdown run from Reed Krogstad with 1:13 left in the first quarter. Jamestown would respond when quarterback Ryan Kallenbach scrambled left out of the pocket and hit tight end Caden Michaelson for an 8-yard touchdown catch with 5:12 left in the half.
GFRR again would get on the board first in a half, this time the second one. Thomas Kraft would rush for an 8-yard touchdown with 4:27 left in the third quarter. That play was only made possible after Jamestown was flagged for a late hit on quarterback Pierce Parks of GFFR taking away a possible 4th and goal from the 8-yard line.
The Blue Jays picked up the pace in the 2nd half, Thomas Newman would score a 1-yard rushing touchdown on a quarterback keeper to the right with 2:08 left in the 3rd quarter. Jamestown would follow that up with a 14-yard touchdown catch from Kallenbach to Tyson Jorrison. Kallenbach was nearly sacked on the play, having his ankles wrapped by a defender but he was able to break away and scramble right then he passed to Jorrison wide open in the right side of the endzone. Jamestown would lead 21-14.
Then things started getting hectic. Haydon Hong would score on 18- and 19-yard catches for touchdowns, the first with 6:32 left in the game, tying it up 21 all. Then the second one came with only 1:01 left in the game. Jamestown was down 21-18.
The Blue Jays with all 3 timeouts wouldn’t even need them. The Blue Jays marched down the field quickly. Kallenbach would throw long passes to Jorrison, then Michaelson before Jorrison would carry the ball in for a touchdown, tying it up with the extra point made from Sarah Sletto at 28-28. GFFR with about 45 seconds to play would not be able to score before regulation and overtime would be needed to decide this one.
Jorrison would be called upon and he would answer with a 5-yard touchdown run to give Jamestown the lead 35-28 with another crucial extra point made from Sletto. GFFR would get the football back and score on a 5-yard touchdown run from Kraft. Vyrn Muir had a decision to make, and he decided to go for 2. Season on the line and they dialed up a play for Hong. Running across the field from the right to the left side of the endzone, Parks would scramble left and find Hong, but the pass would be dropped in the endzone ending the game 35-34.
