WAHPETON, N.D. (NDHP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the victim of a hit-and-run crash in Wahpeton last week died from her injuries on Saturday, October 14th. She’s identified as 20-year-old Bailey Bernstein from Wahpeton.
Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind said on Thursday, October 12th, 2023 at approximately 7:40 pm, two adult females were walking on the shoulder of the roadway eastbound on 11th Avenue South in Wahpeton, in the 400 block. A 2018 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 52-year-old Chad Olson was also eastbound on 11th Avenue South. Olson struck one of the pedestrians, causing her to be thrown into the south ditch. After striking the pedestrian, Olson did not stop, but continued eastbound on 11th Avenue South and fled from the crash scene. The second pedestrian was able to give a general description of the striking vehicle. Police also used several videos of the possible suspect vehicle, which provided additional information about the type of vehicle involved in the crash.
52-year-old Chad Olson of Wahpeton was facing felony charges of criminal vehicular injury and leaving the scene of the injury crash. Authorities say those charges will now be upgraded.
Bernstein was taken to the Breckenridge hospital and then transported by Sanford AirMed to Fargo where she died on Saturday, October 14th.
