VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Nick Horner took the oath of office to become the next Police Chief of the Valley City Police Department.

Police Chief Nicholas Horner was a Valley City native where he was born and raised. He attended Valley City High School where he graduated and attended Valley City State University. Chief Horner transferred to Lake Region State College in Devils Lake where he received his AAS with focus on Law Enforcement.

Horner worked for Renville County for six months before applying and subsequently being hired by the Valley City Police Department. Horner worked as a patrol officer and was later promoted to Field Training Officer. In 2016 Chief Horner was promoted to Patrol Sergeant. Horner worked as a community relation Sergeant setting up functions and presentations with the public. Horner was appointed Chief of Police on October 3rd 2023. Chief Horner enjoys hunting, fishing, and other activities outside. He and his wife, Ashley, have two children and live in Valley City.

The Valley City Commission appointed Horner on a 4 to 1 vote, Commissioner Jeff Erickson voted against the motion during the October 3rd regular city commission meeting.

Horner talked about his immediate mission for the police department.
