JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown City Council unanimously approved on Monday, Oct. 2, to not demolish a caboose located at Frontier Village.

The City Council placed the topic on the agenda of the Jamestown Civic Center and Promotion Committee meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

The Civic Center and Promotion Committee recommended approval in September to dispose of a caboose at Frontier Village that was originally owned by New Haven Railroad and purchased by Midland Continental Railroad. The city of Jamestown owns Frontier Village but Jamestown Tourism manages it.

The caboose has been closed to visitors for at least the past four years. There is a Northern Pacific caboose at the Frontier Village that is open to visitors.

According to Councilman Schloegel the estimated cost to make the caboose safe for visitors was between $20,000 to $30,000. That price was last checked before the pandemic.

Schloegel said he is fine with holding off on the disposal of the caboose. He said the City Council should set a deadline of spring 2024 to decide what to do with it.

Mayor Dwaine Heinrich said the caboose doesn’t have to be disposed of this fall. He said the issue can be discussed at the next Civic Center and Promotion Committee on Oct. 24.
