Sometimes a tennis score is deceiving and today was one of those days. Valley City lost 9-0 to West Fargo, but had match points at #3 doubles, and were up a set at #1 doubles. They also lost both sets by a break at #5 singles, had the second set tied at 5-5 at #2 singles, and had the super tiebreaker tied at 8-8 at #4 singles.
Head Coach Matt Neilson shares his thoughts. “We talked about the mental side of the game in this match. Martina Navratilova has often said, “In tennis, there are only two things you can control – your toss and your attitude.” And attitude covers our pillars. If you have the right attitude, you give 100%. If you have the right attitude, you are positive. If you have the right attitude, you communicate. If you have the right attitude, you have excellent sportsmanship.”
“Today, we left individual points and, in a couple instances, matches on the table with our lapse on the mental side. We will work through this as a team and be better because of today’s experience.”
“We are on the verge of playing a match and leaving everything on the court. We need to come with a competitive fire to practices and matches. We need to believe in ourselves to then execute whatever we decide on the court. Success is not in winning or losing a tennis match. Success is when you walk off the court, you know that you did everything you could in the moment to win each point.”
Next action for Valley City will be Thursday at home against Fargo Davies at 4:00pm.
