The Hi-Liners played Mandan and Minot North at home on Friday in non-conference play with each match consisting of three singles and two doubles matches. After being swept by the Braves, Valley City regrouped and pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Sentinels for their first win of the season. After that win over Minot North the Hi-Liners along with many others schools traveled to Fargo for the Sheyenne Invitational Tournament.
According to head coach Matt Nielson this season for his squad has been all about growth.
“Several of our players played well at the Sheyenne Invite. Cole Haugen was extremely happy with his first round match with his serves and ground stroke consistency. Emery Olson had an exhibition win against Minot North and followed that up with having a lot of fun which led to great play against a Shanley player in the Sheyenne. Jon Koenig moved well with confidence and is starting to strategize on the court. Tyler Kotta figured out how the mind goes, so does your play. After switching his mind set down 0-5 in the consolation, he played much better and won two games. Jared Burk and Connor Liebersbach improved tremendously from playing together Friday to Saturday. They lost 0-6 Friday to Mandan and then had a great match the next day with Mandan only losing 5-8.”
The next action for the Hi-Liner Tennis team will be Monday September 18th at 3:30pm at Sheyenne High School.
