Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) The Oakes Tornadoes used an offensive fueled second quarter and a defensive fueled 2nd half to get past the Oak Grove Grovers by a final of 47-20.
The game started slow for both teams as it took near 5 minutes for the Tornadoes to get on the board. A 7 yard Touchdown run by Mario Garza with a 2pt conversion by Trey Skoglund gave the Tornadoes an 8-0 lead. That’d be the only scoring of the first quarter.
The second quarter was offensive fueled for both teams. Beau Thorpe, making his varsity debut at quarterback, threw his first touchdown to start off the second. He would connect with Dylan Harris for a 15yd TD pass to extend the lead to 14-0 with 10:47 in the half. Less then a minute later after a fumble recovery Oakes found pay dirt again with a 3yd Garza run. Oakes would score again with 6:30 left in the half on a 14yd Thorpe-Skoglund connection making it 28-0. Oak Grove would begin to fight back with a 13yd TD run by Brady Donabauer, the Grovers would tack on 2 more with the conversion making it 28-8. On the following Oakes drive Donabauer would get a pick-6 after a screen pass that was intended for Skoglund was scouted. Oakes would get 1 more touchdown before the end of half making it 34-14 with :49 seconds left. Oakes would also get the ball back after another fumble recovery on a bad snap. On the last play of the half Thorpe would run up the far side and be stripped of the ball by Foster Lord who would return the ball to the house from close to 65 yards out to make it 34-20 at the half.
The Tornadoes would have the first half start out well for them forcing a 3-and-out. On the following drive Garza would carry almost half of the Grovers to the endzone from 24 yards out to make it 41-20. The next scoring drive would be in the 4th quarter when Braysen Sagert would get a pass from Thorpe from 7 yards out to make it 47-20. That would be the final score.
The Tornadoes now rise to a record of 2-1 overall. They also expand the lead of their series since 1975 against Oak Grove to 19-12.
The Bank North Player of the Game was Beau Thorpe.
Next up for the Tornadoes is a bye week. They next play September 15th at Hillsboro-Central Valley. You can hear that game on KDDR The Tornado 1220 AM / 100.3 / 95.9 FM.
