The funeral service for Joyce McDougall, 88, Valley City, North Dakota formerly Sheldon, North Dakota will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, July 22, 2023, at St. Raphael’s Chapel in SMP Health-St. Raphael, Valley City.  Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm before the service at St. Raphael’s Chapel.  Burial will be in Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, North Dakota.  She passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at SMP Heath–St. Raphael, Valley City surrounded by her family under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

 

Joyce Charmaine Peterson was born January 9, 1935, to Grant and Alida (Bjornson) Peterson in Binford, North Dakota. She attended school in Binford until she was 16 and then attended and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1952. After high school, Joyce attended and graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1954 as a Registered Nurse.

On November 12, 1955, Joyce married her high school sweetheart Don McDougall at United Methodist Church in Sheldon. Together they farmed the family homestead and had livestock and pigs until their retirement in 1993. Don and Joyce traveled the world together including Germany and Alaska. They spent many winters in Mesa, Arizona and have a lifetime of memories with their family at Long Lake near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Joyce was an active and faithful leader in both her church and community.  She was a member of the Eastern Star and served on the township organization.  

Joyce is survived by her children, Darrin (Cindy) McDougall, Blackfoot, Idaho, Kelly (Michael) Johnson, Fargo, and Alison (Brad) Rutten, Rice, Minnesota; grandchildren, Logan (Lisa) McDougall, Ashley (Eric) Grubaugh, Chris Gregor, Katie Gregor, Craig Gregor, Austin Rutten, Lauren Rutten and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Gene (Gloria) Peterson, Fargo, Wayne (Karen) Peterson, Moose Lake, Minnesota, and Larry (Judy) Peterson, Mesa, Arizona; her sister, Barbara (Richard) Perkins, Mesa, Arizona; and her sister-in-law Sharon (Gene) Goad, Sun City, Florida.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Memorials may be directed to The Village Family Service Center – Adoption Services of Fargo, North Dakota, or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
