VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – On Flag Day (June 14th) Troop 560 conducted the Flag Retirement Ceremony at the American Legion.
The Boy Scouts started with the posting of the colors and the Pledge of Allegiance. John Oakland then recited a Flag Day poem before the cutting and burning of the retired flag. While Matthew Holm cut each stripe, Kellen Westman explained the symbolism of that stripe. Jackson Manlove, August Hochhalter, and John Oakland took turns placing each stripe into the fire. The field of stars was the last piece put in the fire symbolizing the unity of our fifty states while Eagle Scout Teddy Hochhalter played taps.
Matt Nielson said it was a moving ceremony that Troop 560 shared with the community. Thanks to the Boy Scouts along with everyone else that helped make this happen to include Bill Poukka and Kaila Coleman for providing a meal for the Boy Scouts and their families said Nielson.
This ceremony is performed every year on Flag Day at 5:30pm at the Valley City American Legion.
